NH3 or ammonia is a pungent smelling gas, which is perceived mainly in the surrounding of farms. Most of all the colourless gas is produced in the livestock farming, or more precisely in the excrement of the animals. Even in very low concentrations, human can perceive the stench. Frequently the noisome smelling gas is described with the smell of stale urine. However apart from odour, there are many other negative effects that NH3 causes.
Ammonia – An unconscious danger?
In excessively high concentrations, ammonia can cause health-damaging symptoms. NH3 affects primarily the respiratory tract in humans as well as in animals, can damage or even etch mucous membranes and eyes, leads to confusion and in the worst case to death. Lower concentrations of ammonia can lead to chronic allergic reactions such as bronchitis. Also in the environment and vegetation of the plants, NH3 does not remain unnoticed and leaves its traces. Especially forest trees react sensitively to ammonia. Their growth is weakened under a too high NH3 concentration in the atmosphere. Furthermore, ammonia emissions emit nitrogen inputs to sensitive ecosystems. This contributes to the loss of biodiversity if the concentration of nitrogen is too high. Through over-fertilisation of soils with NH3, not only plants can „burn“, but the gas is absorbed into the ground water and subsequently poisons stretch of water. The reason of fish die-off and other aquatic organisms is therefore often due to NH3.
NH3 in the industry
Nevertheless, ammonia is found in lower concentrations in the industrial sector, as it can also generate a positive benefit. The gas is used for example in the production of fertilisers, in the medical technology, in the production of nitric acid, in electroplating and in refrigeration technology.
Although the gas is used in a low concentration, it is nevertheless always necessary to check that no leakage points are formed and the toxic gas cannot escape. Also a too high concentration of NH3 in the air must be detected at an early stage.
The environment and the ecosystem must also be protected against excessive ammonia emissions. Therefore regular monitoring of the emissions in the ambient air must not be neglected.
Microtronics provides a overall solution consisting of hardware, software and service for your individual application area for the monitoring of NH3. The revolutionary measurement technology contains a high degree of comfort. Microtronics offers innovative measuring devices that send alarms via SMS, e-mail or call, when a too high concentrations of NH3 has been detected in the ambient air. In addition, you benefit from the continuous measurements and records of the values. This allows you to carry out extensive (long-term) analyses.
Data logging easy made
The data logging from Microtronics transmit the data via Bluetooth Smart of GSM. Send your measurement data directly to the server via GSM and have a look at the values comfortable from your office via your PC. With BLE you receive your data on your mobile phone, however you have to be nearby the measuring site (range approx. 10 m)
With the technology of Microtronics, you do not have to worry about ensuring the regularity of the measurement intervals, as the data logger manages it automatically for you.
The ammonia good nose continuously measures the concentration of NH3. If a defined limit value is exceeded, the device will send an alarm and you will receive a message in order to be able to react at an early stage. With an automated dosing control, you can even automatically handle this counteraction.
Old NH3 sensor out – new NH3 sensor in
Every 6 months the sensor must be calibrated in order to ensure an accurate measurement. The innovative sensor replacement concept makes it possible to carry out the replacement without any data gaps. You can easily and quickly do the replacement directly at the measuring site. The sensor replacement is simplified by a magnet system. This ensures among other things, that the sensor has been inserted correctly into the device.
The environment is near to our hearts – with Microtronics together you reduce ammonia emissions and thus do something good for the environment.
